Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Being among the worlds‘ biggest mosques, Sheik Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi offers room for more than 40.000 believers. Inaugurated in 2007 it is an imposing view from afar- once inside, though, the building literally takes your breath away: more than 15 different types of marble have been used to adorn the interior, the floor is covered with the biggest handmade carpet ever produced and massive chandeliers are glittering with invaluable gemstones.

Only the most precious material has been used in all parts of the gigantic mosque, Elm Burl from Fritz Kohl embellishing doors inside the building. The beautiful burl veneer, gilded with mother of pearl marquetry, acts as a natural counterpoint to the dominating stone surfaces, creating a tension that further heightens the sense of grandeur inside the prayer rooms.
